Miss Ruby and Mr. Watson: Dallas all rural

Lake Ray Hubbard, in the northeast Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, is man-made. Hubbard presided over the Dallas Parks and Recreation System board from 1943 to 1972. In the morning, blacks, Hispanics and Asians fish here at the lake. Some whites walk their dogs. Or, on weekends, launch their small motorboats into the water. One is called Mumboo and is dark red with glitter. In the distance, a six-lane feeder bridge stretches across the lake, connecting the suburbs to downtown Dallas.

They raise funds for refugees from Ukraine and help others to flee from there: Members of the Jewish communities in the USA. For example, the “Jews For Justice” association in Arizona. And the philanthropist Richard Rosen, who supports an orphanage in Odessa. The children have since been brought to Berlin. The director, Igor Shatkin, remains in Odessa. Child and forced marriage in the U.S.A.

… not a topic usually associated with the United States of America. And yet it affects tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of minors, especially girls.

A national alliance of non-governmental organizations sees the reason primarily in lax legislation. The NGOs persuade politicians and organize workshops for social services, the police and the judiciary. Their strongest weapon, however, is the courageous women who have themselves been victims of child and/or forced marriage: They are now telling their story to shake up politicians and the public so that the marriage age is set at 18 without exception. My radio feature on Austrian Radio Ö1/ORF.

On the night of December 10-11, 2021, a total of 68 tornadoes swept across the U.S. states of Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky, and 90 people lost their lives. Rabbi Chaim Litvin and “Cowboy” Dave Graham are among the countless volunteers working alongside major relief organizations. The Amish community is also helping together.

Note from the road

Greyhound station Columbia, South Carolina, USA

3 hrs layover, no lockers, metal benches with uncomfortable seat grids – but a friendly driver who offers to store my suitcase in the bus prior to departure so that I don’t need to bother with it. It’s one of these situations where I wonder how this country could become so great.

Looking at the calendar and my location: Atlanta, Georgia, USA

On December 15, 1939, the film “Gone with the Wind” premiered here, based on the best-selling novel by Atlanta’s Margaret Mitchell. Hattie McDaniel, later black Oscar winner, was excluded from the gala due to racial segregation. Although criticized for glorifying slavery, the film has been credited with triggering a change in the way how black Americans were portrayed on film.

Covid in the USA

Observations after one month in the country

The Democratic governor of Colorado no longer wants to impose a mask mandate in his state. “Anyone who hasn’t been vaccinated until now doesn’t want to be, and it’s his/her own fault if he/she gets infected.”

In Virginia (recently a Republican governor), the unvaccinated are “encouraged” to wear a mask when shopping. In the 90+% Democratic capital, vaccination is massively promoted.
