In the wild 1960s, she belonged to the avant-garde of American and European off-theatre. Born the daughter of an Orthodox rabbi in Germany, her family fled to New York to escape the Nazis. Now, Judith Malina has been touring the world with her legendary Living Theatre for half a century.

Harlem revival

The former black ghetto is turning into the in district of New York City

In search of affordable living and working space, more and more – mostly white – artists and business people are moving to Harlem. The result is not only a cultural revival of the former black ghetto, which was once a cultural magnet for artists in the 1920s. The gentrified neighborhood is also experiencing an infrastructural upgrade – as well as a social restructuring.
