USA: Mount St. Helens volcano

40 years ago, the volcano erupted, turning day into night

It was one of the most violent eruptions in the history of volcanology: on May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens in Washington State erupted. Fifty-seven people lost their lives, including volcanologist David Johnston. The Johnston Ridge Observatory is named after him. It is located 2,500 meters above sea level opposite the volcano’s summit and serves as a visitor center.
